DAVAO URBAN LEGENDS
85Archiving some of the city's urban folk lore from the rib tickling to the most spine tingling
The funny thing about urban legends is... they are sometimes true.... well, in this case... who knows?
1. the giant snake in a Chinoy-owned business establishment- has anyone heard of a mall run by a chinese which was built over a snake pit or the home of a large snake? This was usually incorporated with Felcris or NCCC but this was not substantiated. I have heard of this particular folklore when i was 7. Legend has it that there is a trapdoor or a hole big enough for 1 human being to fit and this may have attributed to a number of disappearances during the 80's as people might have fallen into to the deep dark snake pits to become snake chow. It was also said that the snakes or the giant snake brought luck to the family who ran the business that's why they never really closed the hole.
2.Davao's Haunted Compound- Im sure thrillseekers have set foot in the long abandoned compound in Champaca st. the area was under close watch after a highschool student was reportedly "possessed" by one of the spirits residing in one of the houses when they went inside the compound. It was said that the family that lived there some years ago was brutally massacred in that compound. Until now, they still haunt the place to seek justice. However, like most urban folklores, it wasn't really substantiated. Some say the story was brought up just to keep juvenile rugby addicts off the said property. it was also said that the property belonged to the city mayor's parents.
3.The ballad of Maria Labo-the thing is, the story of Maria Labo has found its way in the local papers so most probably, this story was partly true. this story caused a stir in the city some 5 years ago. this was about a young woman named Maria who went to Canada to be a caregiver. Before she went abroad, she had taken care of an elderly man who was said to have possessed the so-called "aswang" curse. When the old man died, he passed his powers to Maria.
Finding no luck in Canada, Maria went home. It was then that her thirst for human flesh started there. When her husband, a policeman, went home one night, he was looking for their kids. It was said that the deranged Maria pointed to the stove where she said she cooked her children. Enraged, her husband struck her with a bolo ("labo") where she obtained a scar on her face, earning her the monicker Maria Labo. it was said that she fled to Visayas, then to Mindanao, in a quest to satiate her hunger for human flesh and viscera. Like a typical aswang, she has the ability to change her appearance. sometimes she appears as a beautiful young lass... at other times, she appears as an old woman. I even managed to obtain her cellphone number but all I heard was some growl of some animal or something... Turned it it was a fake.
4. the HIV injection scare in movie theatres-Next to bomb threats, this also caused a stir in big malls in Davao city when there were rumors about some HIV positive persons went a little too "needle" happy with syringes or needles smeared with HIV or AIDS infected blood. It is said that these people would sit beside a lone or unsuspecting moviegoer then prick them with a needle, sometimes leaving them morbid notes like "Welcome to my world" or "Congratulations, you're one of us now.." i was often warned never to go inside movie theatres when i was in elementary for the fear of these needlepricking sticking infected needles on me. another variation surfaced just some months ago when this time, they inject HIV positive blood in Ketchup dispensers in fastfood chains.
5.The ghostly taxi driver of Maligaya- im sure anyone would recall the story about a mom (or in some versions, a student) who hailed a maligaya taxi cab late one night from work (or from school). upon entering the vehicle, the mom or the student already felt a sudden chill on the spine but she dismissed that as probably caused by the cold of the night. she tried striking a conversation with the driver who was unusually silent. upon reaching the destination, she reached for her wallet in the bag for the fare and when she turned to the driver, blood was oozing from his head or in some versions, the driver was headless... in sheer horror, she ran out of the vehicle only to turn around and find that the taxi was no longer there.... some say it was the ghost of the taxi driver who met a gruesome accident with the cab in total wreck. the number was sometimes 416. When asked about this issue, the owner of Maligaya denied the story saying either the taxi does not exist or even if it did, the driver has retired.
this is all i have collected so far... feel free to add... or maybe do some corrections in case i got it wrong...

I do recognize all this urban story. We always want to believe some of the story but I could not find people that can really told the story correctly and explain what really happen. I think the witness are gone or eaten by this snake or aswang.
We dont know what really the objective or the purpose of this urban legend story but this will can cause effect to people of davao or to the people want to be in davao.
As far as I know "Davao", it is a lovely place to be!..
ps...im searching for a story for an HIV story in davao, I want to read a column for more info..
thanks...
Mariang labo was pronounced on our native dialect from aklan as Mariang Eabo. Many on our townsfolk may testify her existence. And I was one of them. As you can see if you grow up in a city it is very impossible for you to believe on such stories, but for us, we grow up in the province where we have experience to see several frightening creatures on our childhood. while i was 11 years old I have witness an aswang who was in humman form while watching my two little brother playing. she didnt notice that i was watching her and suddenly i saw her mouth open very wide as her saliva fall down around her mouth and it appears very sticky as her eyes are buldging as she look on my two brothers. As I watch her, she began to notice that somebody is watching her, she turned aroud and she saw me, then she turned her back away from me and walk far away from two brothers. and suddennly she stop and turn aroud her neck 90 degrees without moving her body. I was shocked and couldnt make my body move or even to shout., thanks to my uncle, he arrived at the right time as he shout for help then the woman(aswang) disapeared. If not for my uncle, i'm sure one of my brother has been eaten by an aswang.

THAT IS NOT A REAL STORY BECAUSE I DONT BEILEVE ABOUT THAT
this story is about my aunt, when she was pregnant with her baby. there was an old lady who keeps on walking in front of her house and my aunt told me, that everytime she passes her house she would always stared her for about 20-30 sec. and sometimes she would find a way to get close to her by picking on some leaves on the tree. The rumor about her was shes "aswang". And people from the barrio never seen her before and it was said that she live in the woods. The end!!!!!!!
What is this? This is full of crap. No wonder our country voted for a moron !
i have heard of the snake thing in nccc and fell for it. i was in elementary those days so you know, kids fell for almost anything.
the story of maria labo was quite a scary, believable yet funny experience for me. i was in grade 6 back then and me and my skulmates would go home early after class because of her said existence.
there were pictures of here sold in the stores outside dcnhs and yes, we too got her number. they were really freaky. and i also heard that she likes places which started with the letter "b" like bangkal, bunawan, bajada and so on...
later eventually we got tired of the scare thing and went back to our post class chatting and stuff.
haven't heard bout the champaca st. scare though.
the story of the needles at cinemas are quite a blur in my memory as well as the driver. but, yah... heard of them.
how true about the rumor that the snake in NCCC is already dead?
That was so scary but very informative.. Ive heard of the giant snake though its more likely a half man half snake thing and the said mall was Robinson's..Ive also heard about the HIV scare a few years ago..The hiv-infected-ketchup thing..But i think i wasnt still around on the hiv moviehouse scare..About maria labo, ive seen an article about her at the site im supposed to be a member..Became curious so i click on Google to do some researching then i found your article..This is mind-boggling and spine tingling news ive ever heard..Thinking that she was n0t a fiction and could be real..
About the maria labo my classmates and other 2nd year students were in our bukid when they saw maria labong(maria labo for others)running at there back when they saw it they ran and jump over the fence then my weak and chubby friend cried because of what happend to them !
About the snake thing story iheard about that from my cousin that the snake only eats beutiful girls i dont know why but idont usually believe to a story that i cant see but the hiv scare ive heard of that but in the other way hiv positive persons leaves away a injection in the chair in the movie theater then if someone use that chair
they will be struck by the injection into their butt !
about the story of maria labo, i actually believe its real because people from our province have seen her, the story goes that after she was attacked by her husband, she fled to leyte to stay for awhile, people from our town believed that she was the one because of the scar on her face and about the legend of the giant snake in a mall, i have heard about that here in cebu and i have heard that the Robinson's mall is the mall that houses the snake, it is also believed that the creature is a half human/ half snake and is a son of the rich chinoy owner.
The first one was true !! coz i just heard it kanikanina lang nung nasa taxi kame ng lola ko with my other cousins, yung lola ko nagkekwento tungkol sa Davao then she told about the mall where the snake comes from but that snake was not just a snake its HUMAN HEADED SNAKE DAW !! THEN i WAS SHOCKED ABOUT THAT !! NALAMAN TO NUNG LOLA KO NUNG SUMAKAY SiYA SA TAXi THEN ... i dont know where my lola is but the driver tell about this story and the driver believed that the HUMAN HEADED SNAKE WAS TRUE !! BECAUSE THE UNCLE OF THE DRiVER WAS A CONSTRUCTiON WORKER WHO WAS ONE OF THE WORKERS WHO BUiLT THE MALL THEN THE DRiVER says that the snake eats when he attracts to a human and the snake has a room underground but not just a room the snake has its own SPYCAMS the spycams was attached to the fitting rooms of the MALL , when someone will go inside of the fitting rooms the HUMAN HEADED SNAKE Will see the human in the tv or computer ?? when he attracts to it , he will push a button then the floor of the fitting room will open then the prey will fall to a long canal going down straight then TADAAA !! THE LUNCH iS READY !!! ..... SO SCARY !!!
Jesus Christ.. now i remember maria labo, yes shes true, and she stayed her for year(s) here in Mintal Davao City (Southern Mindanao) and killed several people, i was a high school back then and God i was so afraid to go to school at that time and all of the students and teachers, then when the killing still increasing, our principal declared no class for a week and go home early because maria labo strikes only at night as what they said,.I thought its just a story to scare kids, but its so fucking true.. she freaked us all... The police found several body without liver, heart etc. in her dorm.. and the police said that they were eaten alive or so whatever. the police search around every village, compound but they didnt capture her... -UNTIL NOW-
no d ako naniniwala walang picture na mapatunayan ngang tutuo.
owh my god so scary
the story of maria labo is defenitely true .. idk san part ng laguna hir in manila ..she got caught but she escape .. gosh .. yir 2011 na .. cant barely believe kung di mismo ng dad ng frend ko nag kwento .. im not a kid anymur pra sbhn ng ganung story .. kea i believe that so much ..
Champaca was awwwwsoooomeee. we had our first hand of haunting doon. that was way back 2 years ago, after from a tiring party near SM then we decided to go in MTS to have something to eat. then we went pass through champaca street where the compound was located.. then the weird things started to happen. appearing-disappearing man in orange figures... a silhouette following us around the bushes ---and the twinkling streetlights. that was the best. haha!
my god,,, totoo kaya yan si maria labo..? just pray to god, and have trust in him...
my God,, pagkatapos kong mag post ,, my god,, lumamig ang likod ko,,, parang bagong masahe ng effecasent oil,, na parang mainit,, ewan,,, my god
Do you know the story about durian hotel? the story at hospitals where some payward rooms are not in use?
ive always ..
sayng that to my classmates ..
and then naniniwala clah lalo na ung sa big snake ..
I'm familiar w/ all the stories mentioned (I dunno if they are true) except the one in Chmapaca which I saw a video in youtube per wala naman multo (baka yun yung na mention nyo na ala blair witch para sa video editing class) and Maria Lobo which really freaked me out! SCARY! haha you have any more info about Maria?
Well I guess part of the mystery of Maria's story is the fact that though people insist that she's not real, her story's credibility made it to the newspaper and there are numerous accounts of people (dito pa lang sa site na to) stating that she is real, so it will make us think more and be scared more! hahahahaha pero in reality we'll really never know unless she shows herself up-close and personal....scary never mind, leave it a mystery nalang! haha!
how come hindi kasali ang El Punto Vista sa Buhangin, at ang Davao Deathsquad?
wow its not true i knew it daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
add more pls...like the stories....
theres no story about the durian hotel. It was never open. The owner went bankrupt before opening. Could not get additional loan and thats it. The case took years and now the banks own it. the building in now for sale. If theres something without story in davao then they will make a story for it. people believe everything. They have hundreds of believes and they are even deffirent from barangay to barangay. Here is the one thing good and for my neighbours its not good again. People allways say, that its true. then if you ask where they got the story then it comes from the olds or from the natives in the province. blablabla. Like the big bat getting foetusses of pregnant woman during night. All samalenos are affraid of it but nobody really knows somebody with a missing foetus. Storys from husbands who want there wifes to stay inside i think. i dont say i dont believe any of all but here in the phills we are very very very supersticious. 99,999 percent is NOT true. It starts allready when we are young. Mother says dont do this or ....
MERON AKONG NA EXPERIENCED NONG ELEMENTARY PA AKO. NUNG GABI NA YUN AY TALENT NIGHT NAMIN MGA BOYSCOUT. NONG NAG-UMPISA, NUNG UNA AY MASAYA LANG AT NORMAL LANG NAMAN PERO SA NAGDAAN NA ORAS MERON KAMING NAKITA NA MATANDA NA MATAAS ANG BUHOK TAPOS PATUNGO SIYA GRADE 3 NA CLASSROOM NAMI KASI MERON DAANAN DON PATUNGO SA MGA KABAHAYAN PERO NAGTAKA LANG KAMI KASI DI BUMALIK ANG MATANDA NA MATAGAL NA YUN PINASIRA DUN. KAMI NGA DI MAKATAWID DUN SIYA PA KAYA? AWW! TAKE NOTE THAT TIME, FIRST TIME KO NAKITA YUNG FULL MOON ANG SOBRANG LAPIT AT MALAKI AT KULAY ORANGE.. SCARY BUT ITS TRUE.. BY THE WAY I'M FROM BUKIDNON AND IT WAS 9 YEARS ITO NANGYARI..
Maria Labo was a thesis by a group of students from UP. They wanted to study about transmitting stories and how fast would one seemingly credible story would be passed from one to another.
Hi po, beliv it or not totoo po si maria labo. It happened few years ago.

yeah, i've heard of these urban legends. i dont believe them at first, except for the hiv scare, but then agian, with the way legends have been circulating people for a number of years, the details are bound to be changed or exaggerated a little bit. good write up.
