WHY I NEVER JOIN BEAUTY PAGEANTS

By

"Rather than suffer being the butt of the whole country's jokes, I chose to remain in anonymity and spare myself of the humiliation..."

With all the brouhaha about the fiasco on the recent Binibining Pilipinas and it's controversial crowning of Janina San Miguel as Bb. Pilipinas Ms. World, I'm proud to say... I'm glad I heeded my mother's and my father's advice not to join any pageant (well, sorta). Well, atleast after I saw the video on the embarassing question and answer portion of Janina San Miguel, I vowed, Ms. Cybercity would be the first and the last.

Not to brag, but I have been invited a couple of times before to join the search for Mutya ng Davao by one of the former "Mutya" titlist and a coordinator of the said search. Flattered, I told my mom about it and she said, "Forget it!". Fast forward to today, I guess I realized it was all for my own good. Rather than suffer being the butt of the whole country's jokes, I chose to remain in anonymity and spare myself of the possible humiliation. I understand how it feels to be in great pressure being watched by a million and 1 filipinos across the nation and being in front of the country's most notable people. Janina's answer was nothing short of hilarious but I feel sorry for her. And at the same time, her crowning as Ms. World (much to the chagrin of the pinoy vox populi) was a bit questionable. Yes, I am aware that Ms. World ain't some battle of the brains but this person will be representing our country in the next Ms. World. And clearly, beauty and confidence(?) wouldn't suffice. We are known to be one of the countries with the highest English Proficiency rate (and I do hope the judges keep this in mind) and I rather we live up to the hype. On top of that, what's a pretty face if you don't have brains to back it up? Not that I think Janina's an archetypal dumb blonde but gee, she could've come up with a more intelligible answer than "My pamily is the most important persons in my life... Thank you..."

I do have high hopes with the next international beauty pageant but with her crowning as Ms. World, I could feel my hopes crumbling down like the Roman Empire...

Well, Good luck Janina...

I could not agree more. If you read the comments on YouTube, you would notice that there are people who are willing to kill anyone who gave up a negative comment about Janina. This is totally insane. They say that she deserved the crown because she pulled off something that was similar to Miriam Quiambao and she won! Well, Quiambao lost balance while catwalking or doing something similar but she did not suffer verbal diarrrhea, for chrissakes. I personally found it a bit of embarrassing. Organisers of the Bb Pilipinas should screen their contestants before showing them on national television. I just hope that Ms San Miguel could learn all the English she would need for the Ms World pageant.
